Kuponginlösen, a coupon-clearing house, was initiated as a subsidiary of DLF,
with the purpose to plan, execute and control promotion activities
involving coupons to consumers. It was a clearing-house to which retail stores
sent all coupons they had received from customers, getting a refund for the full
amount of the coupons, minus a minor handling fee. The
use of coupons, as a promotional phenomenon, was on the increase.
The existing system managing coupon throughput had to be redesigned for
workload reasons, with an additional requirement also to be able to provide
better and more solid analyses. Leif
became the project manager for this new project, and was also involved with the
systems design and the definition of new business processes. The platform chosen
for this application was IBM S/38, which could provide the database capabilities
that were required. The
resulting system matched requirements extremely well and was delivered in time
and on budget. Staff, customers and individual stores all noticed improvements
associated with the system’s deployment. The design also allowed NKAB to
create additional services for its customers, by adding new functionality to the
system without having to redesign the database.
